About Us
NatureRe
Restoring nature, reconnecting communities, across India.

Who We Are
NatureRe is an environmental non-profit started by the RPG Foundation. We work towards restoring India's Natural Ecosystem — in cities, on farms, and along rivers and coastlines, while also supporting the people who depend on them.
Our work is guided by a simple idea: nature and people do better when they are connected, not separated. Whether it's a small urban forest in the middle of Mumbai or a river system stretching across states, we focus on rebuilding the links between people, land, water, and wildlife.
Our Mission
To rebuild nature step by step — connecting green spaces, restoring water sources, and helping farming and fishing communities thrive — so that people and wildlife can live well together.
Our Vision
A future where India's forests, farms, rivers, and coastlines are healthy and connected — where wildlife can move freely, water is protected, and local communities benefit from a thriving natural environment.
Why This Work Matters
India is home to an extraordinary range of plants and animals — from the mountains to the coastlines — even though it covers only a small part of the world's land. This natural wealth supports everything from the food we grow to the water we drink and the air we breathe.
But much of it is under pressure. Forests are shrinking, water sources are drying up, and the green spaces that remain are becoming smaller and cut off from each other. When this happens, plants and animals lose the space they need to survive — and people lose the benefits nature provides, from clean water to fertile soil to a cooler climate.
NatureRe was created to help reverse this — not by planting trees in isolation, but by rebuilding whole, connected ecosystems.
Our Approach
We work across four connected areas, all aimed at rebuilding nature as one system rather than scattered, disconnected efforts:
Green Corridor
Restoring forests and green spaces in cities and rural areas, and connecting them so wildlife can move safely between them.
Agro Ecosystem
Helping farmers grow crops in ways that restore soil health, use water wisely, and support local livelihoods.
Blue Corridor
Restoring rivers, mangroves, and coastlines — including projects like artificial reefs — to support marine life and fishing communities.
Landscape Connectivity
Making sure all of these efforts connect to one another, rather than staying as small, isolated patches, so nature can function as one living system.
Wings & Roots: Bringing Citizens Into the Movement
One of our Green Corridor projects, The Nest in Mumbai, showed what's possible when a small urban space is restored the right way — it has grown into a thriving natural habitat right in the heart of the city. Wings & Roots takes that same idea and opens it up to all of Mumbai.
Wings & Roots is a city-wide movement inviting citizens to help track and grow the city's biodiversity. It works in two simple ways:
Wings
Citizens observe and photograph the wildlife around them — trees, birds, butterflies, and more — helping build a shared, living record of Mumbai's biodiversity.
Roots
Citizens create and care for native habitats of their own — in their schools, homes, and neighbourhoods — growing the city's green network one space at a time.
Every garden, courtyard, and rooftop that joins in becomes another stepping stone in a larger chain of habitats across the city — helping birds, butterflies, and other wildlife move more freely, and helping Mumbai naturally stay cooler and cleaner.
The Wings & Roots App
The Wings & Roots app makes it simple for anyone to take part, right from their phone. With just a few taps, citizens can:
- Scan a tree — Point the app's camera at a tree's QR code to learn its species, history, and role in the local ecosystem.
- Log a sighting — Photograph and record the wildlife they spot, contributing to a shared, citizen-built biodiversity map.
- Track their impact — Follow the native habitats they've helped create, and see the difference they're making over time.
The app is designed to be easy and welcoming for first-time users — with simple sign-up, clear step-by-step guidance, and helpful information about local species along the way.
About RPG Foundation
RPG Foundation (RPGF), a not-for-profit, finds innovative solutions to problems in society at scale. It is a sister organisation to the RPG Group of companies (with interests in tyres, infrastructure, technology, pharma, energy, rubber, and tea plantations — a $4.4 billion group).
Over the last 15 years, RPGF's programmes have evolved, but our approach has stayed the same: we focus on real, unaddressed needs on the ground; we build on the strengths of our partner organisations; and we work closely with government and community partners to grow our impact responsibly.
RPGF works across Education, Employability (urban and rural livelihoods), Heritage Revival, and Community Development — supporting communities that remain underserved. As part of this work, the Foundation has also seeded three organisations: Pehlay Akshar Foundation, The Heritage Project Foundation, and Artisan:re.
